Rainbow sandstone patio
A patio in Rainbow sandstone from India, banded in ochre, rust and violet. No two slabs have the same pattern.
The job
The patio runs out level from two French windows and sits a few centimetres above the lawn. Slabs of several sizes are laid in a repeating pattern with narrow joints, and sandstone skirting protects the render along the wall.
Laying
Two slabs from the same crate rarely match. We lay them out dry and mix them, so the violet ones don't all end up in one corner. We start from the door so the cut pieces land on the garden side.
Damp and moss
Sandstone is porous and goes green faster than granite on a shaded patio. A sealer on dry stone, redone every two to three years, slows it down. Keep a pressure washer 30 cm away and under 100 bar. If the house is shut all winter, plan a clean in spring.
How much to order
10 to 15% over the measured area. A later batch may not match, and the leftovers make good steps or sills.

Frequently asked questions

Does Rainbow sandstone stain?
More than granite. Wash off barbecue grease and red wine quickly, and use an oil-repellent sealer.
Is it frost-proof?
It depends on the batch. Ask for the frost result of the batch you're getting.
What thickness for a patio?
2 to 3 cm on a concrete base. Thicker on pedestals or sand.
