Your own base

A common job is a family table with a good wooden or iron base and a tired top. We measure the base, check how the top is fixed and cut a stone top to fit. First, make sure the base can carry the weight.

Weight

A round top 120 cm across weighs about 61 kg in 2 cm and about 92 kg in 3 cm. A 200 by 100 cm top in 3 cm comes to about 160 kg. A base made for wood may not be stable under that. A pedestal needs a wide foot so it doesn't tip when someone leans on the edge. On big tops we often cut 2 cm with a mitred edge, so it looks thicker without the weight.

Shape

Anything that fits on a slab, which is about 3 m by 1.6 to 2 m. Round and oval tops are cut on the CNC or by water jet and edged by hand.

Finish

A dining table sees wine, lemon and vinegar, and on polished white marble each glass can leave a dull ring. Go honed, where marks blend in, or a darker stone like Emperador, or just accept the patina. Coffee and side tables see less food, so polished is fine there. Onyx and Calacatta make striking coffee tables, and an offcut from our clearance can be enough for a small one.

Outside

It freezes regularly in the Aube, and water in marble can open small cracks over the years. For a table that stays out, granite or Dekton are safer.

Delivery

We carry the top in flat and set it on the base, two or three of us, then fix it with pads or brackets. A table gone dull after years of rings can be honed and repolished.
