Beige stone crazy-paving pool surround

A pool surround in crazy paving, irregular pieces of warm beige stone trimmed one by one so the joints wander instead of following a grid.

The job

The pool is rectangular with its corners cut at 45°. A pale coping runs all the way round, with blue mosaic at the waterline. The deck is beige stone with a slightly rough face, and the back wall is faced in blocks of a similar colour.

Laying it

We lay each piece dry first, then trim its edges with a diamond blade to keep a joint of about 1 cm. We avoid three joints meeting in a star, once you see them you keep seeing them. It's slower than calibrated pavers, but the angled corners don't need a visible cut.

Upkeep

Pale stone shows soil and leaves. A water and oil repellent sealer slows that down. Put saucers under pots, they leave lime rings. On the coping we round the edges, people sit there with their feet in the water.

Base

A reinforced screed with about 1.5% fall away from the pool and the walls. Worn joints can be redone in sections.

Frequently asked questions

Another question? Call the workshop: 07 45 20 76 39

How thick should it be?

On a screed, 2 to 3 cm is enough for people walking on it.

Is it slippery when wet?

A rough face like this grips far better than polished stone.

How are worn joints repaired?

We rake out 1 to 2 cm and repoint. The stone stays where it is.
