Emperador marble bathroom
A bathroom in brown Emperador marble with white veins, large tiles on the walls and floor, and a pedestal basin in bands of polished and split stone.
The job
Walls and floor are in large polished Emperador tiles. The basin is shaped like an upside-down pyramid, alternating polished grey-brown bands with paler split-face bands, with a square bowl in the top and the spout coming out of the wall.
Two finishes
Polished stone looks darker, a split face catches the light and looks paler. The rough bands hold more limescale, so give them a wipe.
Fixing
White or light grey adhesive made for natural stone, so nothing shows through. In a shower the waterproofing goes on first, marble isn't waterproof. A tile cracked across a vein gets set aside when we sort them.
From abroad
Emperador goes from light to quite dark. Ask us for a video of the tiles laid out dry before they go up, and keep five or six spares.

Can Emperador go on a shower floor?
Polished, it's slippery. A separate tray like here, or a honed finish, is better.
Are the white veins faults?
No, they're old cracks filled with calcite. They don't weaken a sound tile.
How thick are the wall tiles?
Usually 1 to 2 cm on walls, 2 cm or more on floors.
