Marble stair restoration
A marble staircase is restored one step at a time, on site, by diamond grinding the treads and repairing chipped nosings, then polishing or honing.
Treads and nosings
Wear hollows out the middle of each tread, where the foot turns. We grind with a hand machine and diamond discs, from 100 to 1500 grit, because a rotary floor machine does not fit on a step. Chipped nosings are filled with tinted epoxy and squared up again. Risers get a lighter pass, as feet rarely touch them.
Finish
Polished marble is slippery in socks. In a home with children we advise a 400 grit honed finish on the treads and a polish on the risers. Crystallisation is only done if the stairs are marble or limestone. During the work we do every other step first, so the stairs stay usable.
We also make natural stone staircases in our workshop. Back to marble restoration.

Can a broken step be repaired?
A chip can, with tinted epoxy, but a step cracked right across has to be replaced.
Are polished marble stairs slippery?
Yes when wet or in socks, which is why we suggest honing the treads.
Do you restore granite stairs?
Yes, with diamonds only and no crystallisation.
