Quartzite

What we offer

We don't sell quartzite. If you want a veined marble look that copes better in a kitchen, we'll first show you quartz and Dekton or porcelain. A quartzite slab you bring along is looked at case by case.

Real or fake quartzite

Some stones sold as quartzite are really dolomitic marbles, softer and sensitive to acid. Fantasy Brown is the best-known case. Two tests on a sample, before you sign anything. Real quartzite scratches glass and a knife won't scratch it. A drop of lemon left for 10 minutes shouldn't leave a dull mark. If the sample fails, we treat it as a marble.

At the workshop

Its hardness of 7 wears blades and grinding wheels much faster than marble, and sink cut-outs are often done by waterjet. Shaping takes longer, which is worth knowing before the quote.

In use

Taj Mahal and Calacatta Oro look alike from two metres away. In use, quartzite doesn't scratch with a knife or mark with lemon. On the other hand it's harder to repolish on site. For a second home or a holiday let where cleaning is hit and miss, it's more forgiving. Some batches are fine outdoors, we check the frost test for the batch.

The slab

As with marble, you choose the whole slab. On a variety with large patches like Patagonia, a dark area right on the hob changes the whole balance of the worktop, so we place the templates on it before cutting.
